Korean Content Sparks Global Learning Boom, Outpacing Chinese on Duolingo

Duolingo, the globe's biggest language-learning platform, has positioned Korean as the seventh most-learned language on its app, moving ahead of Chinese. This service provides lessons in over 40 languages and counts among its members 500 million registered users along with 40 million who engage actively each day.

Luis von Ahn, who at 47 serves as the CEO and co-founder of Duolingo, linked the increasing popularity of learning Korean to the surge in global appeal of Korean culture. He stated, "The international triumph of content such as Squid Game There has been a dramatic increase in individuals eager to learn Korean," von Ahn stated. "Currently, approximately 5.5 million users are learning Korean via Duolingo.

Introduced with the aim of providing universal access to education, Duolingo made its debut on the Nasdaq in 2021, coinciding with its tenth year since inception. As of today, the firm boasts a market valuation of $14.8 billion.

Von Ahn, who grew up in Guatemala, attributed much of what drove him towards founding the company to witnessing firsthand how widespread poverty and restricted educational opportunities influenced him during his formative years. For Guatemalan students aiming to enter U.S. colleges, taking the TOEFL—Test of English as a Foreign Language—was mandatory but challenging; they had to travel to nearby El Salvador for this purpose, racking up expenses exceeding $1,000.

One of the most gratifying experiences of my life occurred around eight years back when I learned that Syrian refugees who had arrived in Europe were utilizing Duolingo to acquire the languages spoken in their new homelands," he stated. "Duolingo serves as an equitable platform where both billionaires and refugees have identical opportunities for learning.
