Omar Hilale Urges Swift Action: A Middle East Free from WMDs

On Wednesday during a meeting in New York, Moroccan Ambassador Omar Hilale highlighted the critical necessity of establishing a Middle Eastern zone free from nuclear arms and other weapons of mass destruction.

At the Sixth Conference on setting up this zone in the area, he emphasized the crucial juncture we are facing globally, characterized by an accelerated decline in disarmament and non-proliferation initiatives, exacerbated by increasing geopolitical upheavals and a lack of respect for current multinational agreements.

Hilale cautioned that each day lacking concrete advancements towards nuclear disarmament pushes the global community nearer to catastrophic outcomes. He emphasized that the time frame for securing a secure and flourishing world devoid of nuclear arms is diminishing.

He highlighted that by engaging in open, transparent, and inclusive dialogues, the conference participants can surmount challenges and reinforce their dedication to creating a Middle East devoid of weapons of mass destruction. The achievement of these goals relies heavily on unwavering international backing and the robust execution of previous pledges.

The conference this year includes representatives from every country in the Middle East, such as Iran, whereas Israel has chosen not to attend. This gathering follows the guidelines set by the 2018 United Nations General Assembly meeting and aligns with the objectives established during the 1995 Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference aimed at establishing a future legally binding agreement to create a zone free of nuclear weapons in the region.
