India's Auto Sector Needs a Innovation Boost: NITI Aayog Calls for Increased R&D Investments

New Delhi [India], April 18 (ANI): According to a report from NITI Aayog, India’s progress in the international automotive industry is hindered mainly because of insufficient innovation, which stems largely from underdeveloped research and development facilities.

According to the report, India’s expenditure on research and development continues to be one of the smallest globally, particularly when contrasted with major car-producing countries like Germany, Japan, and the United States.

The statement mentioned that one of the key obstacles to India’s progress in the international automotive industry is the shortage of innovation, which is primarily due to insufficient research and development facilities.

The report stated, "Such inadequate investment significantly hampers the nation's capacity to stay competitive in new technology sectors like electric vehicles, self-driving cars, and intelligent transportation systems."

Although Indian producers excel at manufacturing affordable, large-scale automobiles, the study pointed out that the deficiency of a robust innovative ecosystem hinders the creation of sophisticated and distinct offerings. This shortfall in innovation poses challenges for India to distinguish itself within the intensely competitive international car industry.

A key challenge highlighted in the report is the scarce cooperation among industries, universities, and research entities. This lack of engagement hampers the sharing of concepts and advancements essential for crafting advanced automotive technologies.

Due to these deficiencies, Indian businesses frequently rely on overseas technological resources, driving up production expenses and diminishing their capability to develop advanced vehicles domestically.

The report particularly highlights that India is falling behind in crucial sectors like battery tech, Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and more. AI -fueled production. These advancements are considered crucial for the future of the worldwide automotive sector.

To surmount these obstacles and attain sustained development, NITI Aayog has highlighted the necessity for a significant boost in research and development spending.

The statement indicated that “In order to stay competitive and secure long-term development, India needs to substantially boost its research and development spending and create a strong environment that encourages innovation and technological progress.”

The report advocated for building a robust ecosystem that fosters innovation, enhances cooperation, and empowers Indian manufacturers to be internationally competitive within the automotive sector. (ANI)
