Budget Brings 'Hawa-Hawa'i' Criticism: AAP’s Atishi Takes on Delhi Budget

New Delhi [India], March 25 (ANI): Atishi , the opposition leader in the Delhi Legislative Assembly, harshly condemned on Tuesday the Delhi Budget 2025-26 introduced by the BJP-led administration, referring to it as a "Hawa-Hawai" budget.

Speaking to the media, Atishi contended that the budget lacks a foundation, as the Delhi government will not be capable of producing the suggested Rs 1 lakh crore income.

If we were to describe today’s budget, presented by the BJP in the House, with just one word, it would be ‘flashy.’ This ₹1-lakh-crore budget lacks substance. Delhi government isn’t expected to generate Rs 1 lakh crore revenue from any source,” he stated. Atishi .

Atishi raised concerns about the lack of an Economic Survey, which she thinks would have offered a transparent view of the city’s fiscal condition. She alleged that the BJP aims to dismantle the government school system in Delhi, noting that the education budget has dropped to 19%, marking the lowest level in a decade.

"The Economic Survey was not presented in the legislature because they introduced an unfounded budget in the House. Upon examining the percentage allocations, this marks the first instance in ten years where the education budget has fallen under 20%, with merely 19% being allotted to education. This indicates that the BJP’s objective is to dismantle the public school system in Delhi," he stated. Atishi .

Furthermore, Atishi highlighted that the health budget has been reduced to 13%, potentially resulting in the elimination of free treatments at government hospitals and neighborhood clinics. Additionally, she condemned the decrease in the MCD budget by Rs 1500 crores, asserting that this cut could undermine the sanitation infrastructure in Delhi.

“For the first time, the healthcare budget has dropped to merely 13%. This indicates that the BJP plans to discontinue the free medical services available to everyone at Delhi’s government hospitals and neighborhood clinics. Additionally, the MCD budget has been cut by Rs 1500 crores with the intention of dismantling the sanitation infrastructure in Delhi,” she further stated.

On the contrary, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta introduced the budget as a "momentous" move aimed at reshaping Delhi into a hub conducive for investments and innovations.

Allocated with a sum of Rs 1 lakh crore, this budget aims to stimulate growth, advancement, and enhance the standard of living for the people of Delhi.

There has been a substantial increase of 31.58% in the budget compared to last year, allocating a sum of Rs1 lakh crore across multiple areas such as education, transportation, and urban renewal.

In fiscal years 2024-2025, the allocated budget stood at Rs 76,000 crore. This year, however, the budget has been raised to Rs 1 lakh crore, marking an increase of approximately 31.58 percent. "This represents the most significant rise observed in any national budget," noted Gupta. (ANI)
