On Wednesday, Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue was presented with the Flame of Unity for the upcoming National Sports Festival. This event will be held in Ogun between May 16 and May 30.
The Benue Deputy Governor, Sam Ode, received the torch on behalf of Alia from representatives of the National Sports Commission.
The governor characterized the visit as an emblem of unity aimed at bringing sports enthusiasts together and enhancing national solidarity regardless of their varied origins.
He commended the organizers of the festival, noting that the event would promote harmony and assist in uncovering fresh athletic potential.
Alia emphasized her administration's advancements in the realm of sports, with special attention to developments in infrastructure.
None of the former governors of Benue have committed as much to sports development as we have. We've dedicated substantial funds, particularly towards football initiatives.
"We view sports not merely as entertainment but as a commercial venture. Potential investors ought to consider exploring prospects within the state’s athletic industry," he stated.
The authorities aim to broaden their scope to include sports like volleyball, handball, and table tennis with the intention of discovering athletes capable of representing the country.
The head of the NSC delegation, Ikana Mbora, stated that formally presenting the torch not only welcomed Benue to the festival but also signaled the beginning of the countdown to the event.
