The UK-based monitoring group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, reported that an "Israel Defense Forces unit" entered the town and opened fire with intense artillery on locals trying to prevent their advance.

The Israeli military stated in an official release that they "detected multiple terrorists firing at them from southwestern Syria," and as a result, "the Israeli forces retaliated with return fire."

In addition, the Israeli military stated that they had also targeted "remaining military assets at the Syrian bases of Tadmur and T4" — referring to two military facilities located in and near the city of Palmyra.

"Following a night of being restrained with cuffs and assaulted at a military facility, Hamdan Ballal has been released and will soon return to his family," stated Israeli co-director Yuval Abraham on Tuesday.

Ballal's attorney, Lea Tsemel, stated that he and the other two arrested Palestinians passed the night on the ground at a military camp and received only basic medical attention for their wounds from the assault.

The Associated Press reporters present at the location stated afterward that upon being transported to the hospital in Hebron, Ballal exhibited signs of injury including bruising around his face and bloodstains on his attire.
