Ogun Poised for Glory at National Sports Festival – Abiodun

Ogun State On Thursday, Governor Dapo Abiodun stated that the state’s extensive preparations have demonstrated its readiness to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, which is set for mid-next month.

As anticipated, this event should draw approximately 15,000 participants from all over the nation, turning it into a grand sports celebration.

Abiodun stated this when he spoke with reporters following an inspection of the premises prepared for the smooth execution of the sporting event.

The inspection covered several locations including the MKO Abiola International Stadium, an Olympic-size swimming pool, tennis courts, and a handball court situated behind the main arena, along with the Alake Sports Centre, all located in Abeokuta.

He mentioned that the facilities being established will serve not just for the forthcoming festival but also for various contests at both national and international levels.

Abiodun stated that "The newly installed track has started yielding positive outcomes. Due to the high-quality tracks, the African Athletics Federation has selected Ogun State to host the under-20 athletics event in 2026."

So, as a result of our efforts, Ogun State will now host other prestigious events not only within the country, but also throughout Sub-Saharan Africa and even on an international level.

For us, the excitement stems from the fact that this investment has started to produce returns. This accomplishment will stand as one of the hallmarks of our administration.

Governor Abiodun further revealed that his administration plans to build a pavilion at the rear of the MKO Abiola Stadium. This new structure will be used for various nonsports-related occasions, while reserving the primary arena of the stadium exclusively for athletic activities.

He stated, "I want to confirm that the stadium will exclusively host sports events. For those purposes outside of sports, such as rallies, parties, parades, October 1st celebrations, Labor Day festivities, community gatherings, and Democracy Day observances, we have decided to build a pavilion located at the rear of the stadium which will serve these functions."

All these occurrences will stop taking place at the venue; it will be reserved exclusively for sports-related activities.

The governor additionally disclosed intentions to change the stadium's name.

"Our MKO Abiola International Stadium has transcended its original purpose and is now known as the MKO Abiola Sporting Complex. A renaming ceremony will take place shortly," he stated.
