The South East Zonal Coordinator of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Chief Bernard Ezema, has warned stakeholders—such as government officials, sports fans, trainers, and administrators—to avoid misusing their power for private benefit in sporting events.

During a courtesy visit from the Enugu Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) to his office at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu on Thursday, Ezema shared these comments.

He restated the NSC's pledge to advance sports in Nigeria, with special attention to the South East area, and voiced concerns about the condition of sports in Enugu State. He highlighted his resolve to rejuvenate sports growth and tackle pressing matters such as the graying demographic of athletes and the necessity to discover and cultivate emerging talents.

Ezema recognized SWAN's crucial role in advancing sports development and urged for enhanced cooperation among all parties involved.

"I greet everyone here. Your arrival comes at an opportune time, and I acknowledge the significance of SWAN in advancing athletics. Despite encountering obstacles throughout the latest eliminations phase, I remain hopeful for upcoming partnerships with SWAN," he said.

He stressed that the main mission of the NSC focuses on fostering sports development rather than merely competing, and he highlighted that joint endeavors are essential for enhancing athletics within the area.

"Sports is not an individual endeavor, and I pledge to collaborate closely with SWAN to enhance conditions for athletes in the South East. Many of our athletes are growing older, and we haven’t yet spotted new talent to take their place. It’s crucial that we alter this scenario and strive for substantial advancement," Ezema stated firmly.

Previously, Gideon Iwueke, the chairman of SWAN, greeted Chief Ezema upon his arrival in the South East and highlighted the significance of collaboration for advancing sports development.

He observed that the purpose of the visit was to promote a cooperative atmosphere for enhancing sports within the state. Nevertheless, he expressed disappointment over the omission of SWAN Enugu State from various sports development initiatives organized by pertinent organizations.

"I am gathered here today to get acquainted with all of you and to talk about the path ahead for enhancing grassroots sports development within the state," Iwueke said.
