Zurich Airport, which handles the most air traffic in Switzerland, has declared that flight notifications will no longer be broadcast in French.
As stated in a report by Swiss media Tages-Anzeiger The airport has eliminated French from its public announcements and now uses only German and English.
This choice is consistent with Zurich Airport’s " silent airport " policy, aimed at minimizing announcements to enhance passenger comfort and tranquility, as explained by airport spokesperson Livia Caluori to AFP .
The aim of this approach is to minimize announcements as much as possible, guaranteeing a quieter and more pleasant environment for our visitors, she added.
Multilingualism stands as a key characteristic of Switzerland, where four official languages coexist: German, French, Italian, and Romansch. Despite German being the most commonly used, French maintains its dominance in specific areas.
Nathalie Berchtold , spokesperson for Swissport , the firm managing ground operations stated clearly:
"The decision regarding the languages used for announcements rests with the airport operator or the airlines."
