NGOs Urge Allocation of ICT Budget for Disabled Communities

A local rights organization, the Signs of Hope Trust, has called upon the government to set aside funds for Information Communication Technologies (ICT) aimed at supporting individuals with disabilities.

These comments were made at a disability Indaba organized collaboratively by the Southern African Parliamentary Support Trust, Signs of Hope Trust, and Star FM.

Samantha Sibanda, who chairs the Signs of Hope Trust, mentioned that the nonprofit organization attempted to advocate with the government for funding but did not achieve their desired outcome.

Sibanda noted that "A significant number of individuals with disabilities lack access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Moreover, the gap in research regarding this issue remains insufficient."

We have been communicating with Potraz [Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe] as well as the Ministry of Information Communications Technology, Courier, and Postal Services.

The Albino Trust of Zimbabwe's director, Bruce Nyoni, stated that individuals with disabilities face difficulties in obtaining access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs).

"As an organization, we are concerned about the decline in eye health, which is worsened by smartphone usage along with the shift to a digital economy," Nyoni noted.

We urge all company stakeholders to implement measures against workplace blues to ensure eye health is protected.
