Harry Brook Named New Captain for England’s White-Ball Squad

London [UK], April 7 (ANI): Following Jos Buttler's decision to step down after a poor and unsuccessful ICC Champions Trophy performance, young batsman Harry Brook has been named the new captain for England's white-ball team.

The declaration was issued on Monday. Since 2022, Brook has been an integral member of England's one-day and T20 teams and has played a crucial role in the batting order for all types of matches.

Following a disappointing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 performance, Jos Buttler has resigned from his position.

At present, positioned at number two in the ICC Men's Test Batting Rankings, Brook has been serving as the vice-captain for both ODI and T20I formats over the last year, according to the ICC.

Last September, in Buttler's absence due to injury, he led the team for the first time against Australia, receiving acclaim for his strategic insight and composed leadership style. This tightly fought series saw Australia emerging victorious with a scoreline of 3-2. Despite taking on the responsibilities of captaincy, Brook remained unfazed; he emerged as the highest run-scorer in the series, amassing 312 runs across five games at an impressive average of 78.00 and maintaining a striking rate exceeding 127. His contributions included one hundred and two innings where he reached fifty but fell short of a full ton.

Brook served as the captain for England U19s during the Men's U19 World Cup in 2018. Throughout this tournament, he accumulated 239 runs across five games, including one century and two half-centuries. However, England concluded their participation in the event ranked seventh overall.

"I feel truly honored to be appointed England's white-ball captain," Brook stated in an official press release from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), according to ICC reports.

I've been dreaming about this ever since my childhood days when I used to play cricket in Burley in Wharfedale. My aspirations have always included playing for Yorkshire, competing for England, and potentially even captaining the side someday. Being offered this opportunity now holds immense significance for me.

I wish to express my gratitude to my family and trainers for their constant support throughout my journey. Their faith in me has been instrumental, and I wouldn’t have reached this point without them.

"The nation boasts an abundance of talent, and I'm eager to begin our journey, pushing us ahead toward victory in series, World Cups, and significant tournaments. I’m thrilled about starting and giving my all," he concluded.

Buttler’s leadership started off impressively with England winning the 2022 Men's T20 World Cup. Nevertheless, the team has faced criticism in recent ICC events, particularly with a disappointing performance at the 2023 Cricket World Cup, finishing seventh after securing only three victories out of nine matches. This was followed by yet another early exit from the T20 World Cup in 2024 when they were defeated by India in the semi-finals.

In the white-ball series against India and during the Champions Trophy earlier this year, England secured victories in just one out of the 11 games they participated in throughout various formats. This poor run ultimately prompted Buttler to step down as captain; however, the dynamic batsman stated his intention to keep playing in all forms of the game.

The newly appointed captain’s initial task will start with England facing West Indies in three one-day internationals and an equal number of Twenty20 matches at home beginning May 29. This will be followed by a white-ball series against South Africa hosted in England during September. (ANI)
