On April 15, Accra - The Ghana News Agency reports that Mr. Richard Akpokavie, an experienced sports manager and legal professional, has officially submitted his candidacy for the presidency of both the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) and the Commonwealth Games Federation (Ghana).
On Monday, April 14, 2025, Mr. Akpokavie submitted his application for candidacy at the GOC Headquarters in Accra. This was done prior to the much-anticipated electoral assembly scheduled for April 26 at the Accra International Conference Center.
He handed over his nomination papers to Madam Cynthia Wintima Akudugu, an administrative official at the GOC.
After successfully submitting his nomination, Mr. Akpokavie spoke to the press and expressed his contentment with the seamless filing procedure. He also mentioned that he encountered no problems throughout the electoral preparations.
Akpokavie highlighted his capability to bring together the sports community, an entity frequently plagued by internal conflicts and bureaucratic shortcomings.
We will ramp up our efforts once the nominations are complete, ensuring every federation head grasps our objectives.
I am a promoter of unity, and achieving our objectives requires solidarity across every federation. With my background in sports administration, I bring considerable expertise to the table.
I'm not merely present to guide; my purpose is to be of service. I encourage you all to review my accomplishments, my aspirations, and my dedication.
“Together, we can make the GOC a beacon of excellence and a source of pride for all Ghanaians,” he said in an interview.
Mr. Akpokavie has risen to become a leading candidate in the presidential contest, with multiple organizations backing his campaign to head the GOC.
Candidates for different roles must submit their nominations by Wednesday, April 16, 2025. The complete list of nominees will then be released before the election convention on April 26, 2025.
