Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], April 18: The Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH), one of India’s premier management institutions, has enthusiastically unveiled the establishment of ‘DIGI-SUSTEACH Center’. This initiative aims to offer sustainable growth prospects within the framework of the circular economy. Focused on promoting integration of Sustainable and Circular Economy (SACE) concepts, this center seeks to incorporate these ideas into advanced educational programs spanning both Asia and Europe.
Initiated as part of the EU-supported Knowledge Development for Circular Economy (KODECET) project, which receives funding through the European Union’s Erasmus+ program, this initiative brings together top-tier educational institutions from Finland, Austria, India, and Thailand. With BIMTECH taking the helm as India's primary academic collaborator, significant strides have been made toward achieving these goals. Notably, they've produced an extensive report detailing the current state of circular economy education and established one of only four DIGI-SUSTEACH Centers.
The DIGI-SUSTEACH Center reflects the principles of NEP 2020 regarding hands-on and continuous education through the integration of leading worldwide standards. By incorporating models from the circular economy along with digital sustainability concepts into its academic program, this center aims to cultivate essential skills like analytical reasoning, creativity, and real-world issue resolution among learners, thus equipping them for a sustainable tomorrow. Students will engage in curricula that include initiatives focused on projects, multimedia presentations by renowned specialists across borders, as well as analyses of effective use of resources, reduction of waste, and fostering economic viability via eco-friendly means.
Guided by global benchmarks such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation's CE100 network, the EU's GreenComp framework, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) , the DIGI-SUSTEACH The center utilizes strategic collaborations with the University of Jyvaskyla (Finland) and FH Joanneum (Austria) to provide top-tier education focused on sustainability. The effectiveness of these efforts will be assessed using stringent measures such as student participation levels, scholarly production, and community involvement, thereby guaranteeing significant advancements towards a circular economy.
Dr. Prabina Rajib, Director of BIMTECH, stated, “The establishment of the DIGI-SUSTEACH Center marks more than just an educational achievement; it represents a significant advancement towards reshaping business education for sustainability. Through incorporating concepts from the circular economy into our programs and promoting worldwide cooperation, we aim to prepare our students to spearhead the transition to a restorative economic system. This project resonates with India’s National Education Policy 2020 and establishes BIMTECH as a leader in nurturing environmentally aware leaders capable of instigating comprehensive transformations. We look forward to collaborating with industries and universities across borders to construct a greener future.”
Indian industries have demonstrated significant enthusiasm about engaging in focused group discussions and becoming part of the Centre's Advisory Board. With ESG criteria growing more important, there will be an increased requirement for professionals skilled in circular economy principles. The DIGI-SUSTEACH Center is well-prepared to address this demand via research aligned with industrial needs, collaborative curriculum development, and initiatives aimed at enhancing capabilities.
BIMTECH was founded with inspiration from its late co-founders Basant Kumar Birla and Sarala Birla, pioneering distinctive educational tracks such as the Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM), PGDM focused on International Business (IB), PGDM specialized in Retail Management (RM), and PGDM tailored for Insurance Business Management (IBM). These initiatives have cultivated numerous professionals into esteemed global leaders. Furthermore, BIMTECH has achieved accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and stands among the elite group of top-ranked business schools worldwide known as the Ivy League. The institution thrives in management education thanks to its strong alumni base, which spans across more than 8000 graduates internationally.
