Romania Tests AI Project in Local Schools: A National Education Revolution

The education department plans to launch a trial initiative utilizing artificial intelligence aimed at enhancing teacher activities, the learning experience, and overall education processes.

The announcement was created following a discussion between Education Minister Daniel David and the leadership team at Microsoft Romania.

The ministry will identify the educational institution where the pilot initiative will take place, with Microsoft Romania along with the school’s administration taking charge of implementing the program.

"Artificial intelligence is a technological advancement that inherently carries neither positive nor negative qualities; however, its impact may vary based on our usage. To ensure effective utilization for the betterment of the education sector, we plan to initiate a pilot project. The expansion would subsequently depend on the outcomes," stated the minister.

He pointed out that the conditions for using AI in education were present. "We have initiated an extensive digitization effort within our nation’s educational institutions, and these frameworks mandate certain courses related to information technology as well as offer elective options including artificial intelligence—elements reflective of the ongoing technological transformation. These factors lay the groundwork for more sophisticated applications of artificial intelligence in the educational setting."

The minister additionally stated that he believes AI ought to serve as a resource for both educators and learners, with its utilization needing oversight from an ethical perspective.

In my opinion, artificial intelligence serves as a resource for both teachers and students rather than replacing educators or making learners become complacent. It’s crucial to recognize that AI should consistently undergo ethical and moral oversight. Several nations have initiated similar ventures; notably, Estonia has recently aimed at implementing this across their whole educational framework. Therefore, I believe we shouldn’t lag in Romania when it comes to integrating these advancements into our own educational setup.
