Ex-Man Utd Star Aims to Watch Benni McCarthy’s Harambee Stars in Action

  • Nottingham Forest forward Anthony Elanga has expressed his desire to observe Benni McCarthy's Harambee Stars.
  • Earlier this month, the Kenyan football association appointed a South African as the coach of the country's national football team.
  • During his tenure at Manchester United from 2022 to 2023, McCarthy trained Elanga for a year prior to the Swedish player's move to Forest in 2023.

The former Manchester United striker Anthony Elanda has shown enthusiasm for potentially watching Benni McCarthy's team, the Harambee Stars, in action.

The in-form Nottingham Forest player was trained by McCarthy at Old Trafford for a year prior to his departure.

Earlier this month, the South African accepted the position of coach for the Harambee Stars, marking his first role since departing from the Red Devils.

Is Anthony Elanga going to watch Harambee Stars?

On Thursday, March 20, McCarthy will oversee his inaugural match as coach of the Harambee Stars against the Gambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers forward led his inaugural training session last week and is currently becoming acquainted with his team members.

Kenya is striving to qualify for the World Cup for the first time ever, and McCarthy believes they have what it takes to achieve this.

The Bafana Bafana legend shared a photo of himself in training with Harambee Stars and Elanga was one of the players that commented.

Elanga posted, 'I need to be part of this 🔥🔥,'

On Sunday, March 23, McCarthy will oversee his inaugural home game against Gabon. Meanwhile, Elandga has received a call-up to represent the Swedish national side in friendlies versus Luxembourg and Northern Ireland.

Since departing Manchester United in 2023, Elanga has flourished. According to Transfermarkt, he has scored five goals and provided nine assists in 29 league games this campaign. He claimed an FA Cup title with Man United before asserting his position as a formidable presence in the Premier League.

Elanga and Forest appear set to clinch a spot for European football next season. Currently, they hold the third position in the Premier League with only nine matches left to play.

Is Kenya able to qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

The Harambee Stars rank fourth in their group with five points from four matches. They trail the leader, Ivory Coast, by five points.

Both Gabon and Burundi are also performing better than Kenya. Thus, the Harambee Stars must nearly flawless in their upcoming matches to stand a chance.

Kenyan Reactions to Their World Cup Expectations

@foscraft:

Frankly, I believe he has what it takes. Here’s hoping both he and the new president will implement some reforms.

@jobu_bujo21:

I'm certain about Benni only in terms of his ability to foster growth among younger athletes. I am looking forward to seeing what insights and strategies he brings to our team.

@kwoba_jr:

I see the talent; I think we can do this. The issue has always been subpar leadership within FKF. If he manages to improve that aspect, we stand a chance. Our team consists of some very capable players.

@jm_scientist02:

Lol! Wacha kwanza anapewa na maharagwe kuona nini atakayesikia... Hii WC sinafaka kuonekana vizuri sana. Kwa shahada ya Afcon, hilo ni faraja kwake 😂😂.

@idrismaisiba:

He won't believe what lies ahead for him.
